Started like this

Consisting of -
Asiatam metal hull
Early metal road wheels and return rollers
Black 4:1 gearboxes and upgraded speed 400 motors

To start with the wheels and rollers need changing to late version. So some metal ones purchased from Forgebear.

Installed and the extra hull side armour removed.

Done both sides so far, and that's as far as I've got so far.

Ian.

@Tankbear - Thanks for the kind comment about the KV. It was my 3rd go at using an airbrush and I'm very happy with the end result.

@both - If you do decide to try some of these bearings I would suggest making sure the bushes are a snug, but NOT TIGHT, fit in the hull before you push them in. With my 10mm drill bit they were a tight fit before I worked the drill bit back and forward a couple of times. If you fit the bushes before trying to put the gearboxes back in you will probably find you can't get the gearboxes back in (I found out the hard way and had to extract a tight fitting bush). The way to go is to have the gearboxes in place and slide the bushes over the drive shafts and press fit it into the hull.

If the bushes are a tight fit in the hull I suspect you would find it extremely difficult, if not impossible, to get them out with the drive shafts in place. This would make it very difficult to remove the gearboxes if need arose. The particular bushes I used on the KV are 15mm long and protrude a couple of mm into the inside of the hull. I have drilled the holes so that with a little bit of pressure from the inside you can pop the bushes out again with the driveshafts in place.

Best regards,
David

Looking around on the internet I noticed some people were removing the drive shaft covers from the hull and putting in bearings. Tank Modellbau also had some solutions, such as the one shown in the attached picture.

Given issues such as not being keen to pull parts off my now fully painted model, or knowing which of the 2 available sizes of the Tank Modellbau parts to buy, I did a bit of research then visited Hobby & Engineering Supplies and came away with the plastic bushes shown in the other photo. These particular bushes have an 8mm internal diameter (which fits freely over the Heng Long steel gearbox drive shaft), and a 10mm external diameter. The 10mm external diameter is a little bigger than the holes in the hull but this was solved by removing the gearbox and opening up the holes in the hull a fraction with a 10mm drill bit. The bushes can then be slid over the drive shafts and press fitted into the hull. They've done a very nice job at taking the wobble out of the drive shafts.

For anyone wanting to purchase these bushes, you can get them from http://www.hobbyparts.com.au the part number is BF00800-01000-0150-H.

Here's a couple of photos of my completed KV-1, the one shown in the idler mount repair thread. Since the debut outing at the NBRCTC I've added some "make up". Not far off factory fresh, but a little more weathered now. Thanks to Chad for the inspiration.

Finally some good news. My idler wheels showed up and appear to be in good nick. Hopefully that's the end of the bad luck for this project.

David

Thanks for your kind offer. I'd been offered a Taigen hull at wholesale as a replacement, but would have to wait a couple of months for it. I've put a number of hours of work into the hull now repairing it and removing moulding lines from the wheels to get it ready for painting so I think I'll persist.

It would be nice to have a backup as I'm not sure how well the glue bonds will hold up in the long term. Once I've given the KV-1 a makeover I hope to make it to a tank club meeting, so maybe we can sort something out then.

The rotten luck goes on with the KV. After I repaired the hull I got around to looking at the metal upgrades I had ordered. One of the idlers was badly out of shape. I've been sent a replacement set but they appear to have gone AWOL in the post and I have to get the retailer to follow that one up. I've done my best to beat the idler back into shape and I think it would be useable if I get stuck. Hopefully the issue with the replacement will get sorted soon.

It was nice to get some good news regarding the KV!

Thanks,
David

You are probably right. I've sometimes wondered if the design problems with the original tanks are subsequently manifested in the scale versions.

Although I'm not certain if the problem is a HL QC issue, I think it is just the design of the KV1. I've a plastic and metal KV1 chassis and both suffer the idler wheel wanting to seperate from the hull.

Dave you'll have to remind me to show you the glue for ABS plastic. It is called Tetra something but just shortened to Tetra. It welds the ABS plastic together it also will 'weld' in styrene. Sometimes CA glue will not do the job and you need something like Tetra.

The tidy up. I decided to paint over the repairs to make them look a little more tidy. A full repaint of the model will follow in future so an exact colour match wasn't important. After painting the rest of the the platic track tensioners were put back into place and the speaker remounted. Job done.

Have I tried it - as yet no. However I have put some force on the mounts by hand and they appear quite strong.

Have I over engineered it? I hope so....
