Sorry to post mostly questions but I'm just starting out with the tanks

I think what I'm finding hard to grasp is what 2.4 tx rx works with Tamiya (and eventually with the HL or Taigen stuff)
(is there a tuto about this or another post somewhere)

and what do you have to do to make it 2.4 compatible
(I know the newer 1/35 kits are 2.4)

I have 2.4 on all my rc cars and it was just a question of plugging everything into the rx _ so easy

Hey there

Your answers are quite simple....

Any 2.4 radio will work with the 1/16th Tamiya R/C kits out of the box

NO hobby grade 2.4 radio will work with the Heng Long or Taigen tanks out of the box.

To make a Heng Long or Taigen tank work with a 2.4 radio you must either

A. Throw away all the HL/Taigen electrics and get a aftermarket control board

or

B. Get the RC5HL adapter board for Heng Long or the RC2TG adapter board for Taigen. Only RCTA make such boards and they are available here:

By far the best radios to control tanks are the Turnigy 9X series and the Taranis. This is because these radios offer:
a) Tank specific operational firmware (only made available by RCTA)
b) Are highly programmable
c) Easily made with both levers self centering
and
d) Have plenty of switches for activation of functions.

Compatible with what?

If you are asking compatible together then - possibly depending if the crystal on the receiver board and on the radio are the same frequency

Well that is a good thing - it means you won't be tempted to try and put it in a tank. :)

May sound less than helpful sorry - but it is the truth

Will the Multi Function work the tank if just the Battery Power CN1, Motor Right CN6, Motor left CN7 and receiver Board CN8 are connected ?

Yes - It is always best to start with the minimal of connections

If I was testing what you have - I would connect it all up outside of a tank

Connect just the power, receiver board, speaker and volume knob. Turn on the radio and then turn on the RX18. OK you won't see the flashing Headlight so assume it is on - Then start the tank with the radio

If everything is good then it will start up and you will hear the motor start sound via the speaker. If you can not get to this point then you will have to assume that either the Radio, RX18 or Receiver board is/are broke.

If you do get the startup sound then add another connection and try again. The motors are unlikely to cause a problem but it is possible if there is a problem on your hull wiring for the unit not to work when you connect the 8-pin connector.

Good luck

Ref " Connect just the power, receiver board, speaker and volume knob. Turn on the radio and then turn on the RX18. OK you won't see the flashing Headlight so assume it is on - Then start the tank with the radio" What a good 'tip' thanks I did just that and no go, then wait .........I changed the crystals around as in from board to transmitter and bingo it started, I was like a kid again 10/10. I have stoped it and started it again just to make sure but it wont work now looking like the receiver board/crystals not a good fit .....put a small piece of kitchen foil in the holes for the crystals and it appears to have fixed it. I know you get what you pay for , regards to you all db
